Hough Rapid
Clarity through an at-home test
I designed guidance, result logging and test history for a rapid-test companion app, then iterated when users skipped or misread steps.

The result
I designed a rapid-test companion app to guide people through testing, log results and share verified records.
- Step-by-step instructions
- Step-by-step instructions with visuals.
- Result logging
- One-tap result logging and clear explanations.
- History tracking
- A test history people can revisit.
- Digital proof
- Verified results added to Apple Wallet.
Key functionalities
Step-by-step instructions
Visual instructions and progress feedback help explain the testing sequence.
Result logging
Result logging gives users a way to submit the outcome and read an explanation.
My process
Start with the uncertainty
- 1. Empathize
- I interviewed users and reviewed feedback about rapid-test kits. People were unsure whether they were using the kits correctly.
- 2. Define
- I framed the problem around making at-home testing clearer, reassuring and trackable.
Research, prototype, test, return
I used a Design Thinking process: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test and Implement. It was a loop, not a straight line; testing sent me back to prototyping, and I restarted part of the process midway through.
Ideate
Sketch alternative step-by-step flows and explore icons, illustrations and motion.
Prototype
Build and revise high-fidelity designs with progress indicators, simple copy and visual instructions.
Test
Usability sessions revealed skipped steps and misread instructions. I changed progress markers, animations and wording.
Implement
Deliver the final UI and micro-interactions, including verified results in Apple Wallet.
Biggest challenge
Two launches with different needs
The product owner requested two splash-screen experiences: an expressive Hough logo reveal for a first-time launch, and a fast, responsive return.
- First-time launch
- An expressive Hough logo reveal.
- Returning launch
- A faster, more responsive return.
- I explored the fluid logo shapes and tried different timings, easing and transitions.
- The fuller reveal used smooth transitions for the first visit. A shorter version reduced the wait for returning users.
The launch animations
The product owner approved both versions. New users described the app as high quality, while returning users appreciated the faster entry.
What I learned
Balancing stakeholder needs
Balance stakeholder requests with user needs: the two launch animations served different situations.
Ownership and flexibility
Work across lead and solo responsibilities, keeping the overall direction and implementation details connected.
Motion design as communication
Use timing, easing and brand shapes to communicate, as well as add character.
A user-centered mindset
Test early. Small changes such as progress indicators can improve clarity and user confidence.
